An independent bank, First State Bank has a history that spans more than a century. Originally known as the Bank of Smithville, the bank was established in 1895. More than five years later, local merchants and residents formed a partnership and acquired the Bank of Smithville. The state of Texas permitted private banks to become state chartered financial institutions in 1907.
